Who is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was born in Kuwait to a Pakistani-origin Kuwaiti family. His father was an imam at a mosque in Kuwait. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed earned a degree in mechanical engineering in the United States, and during the final phase of the Afghan jihad, he established contacts with Osama bin Laden. He is accused of suggesting to Osama bin Laden the idea of hijacking aircraft and crashing them into buildings, and of playing a key role in the execution of the plan.
He was arrested in Rawalpindi in 2003 during the Musharraf era and handed over to the United States. He has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2006.
Ramzi Yousef, who was accused of carrying out the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center in the United States, is his nephew. Pakistan handed Ramzi Yousef over to the United States in 1995, and he is still serving a life sentence in a maximum-security U.S. prison.
