Abu Raed Fathi Khazem
Fathi Khazem, also known as Abu Raed, was a former colonel in the Palestinian National Security Forces and a resident of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. He was 60 years old at the time of his death.
After a period of pursuit by Israeli forces, Fathi Khazem was killed inside his home in Jenin. His body was subsequently taken away by Israeli forces.
According to his family, Israeli soldiers ordered Khazem to raise his hands and kneel. The family said that he refused and that a physical confrontation followed, during which Israeli soldiers shot him. The soldiers then removed his body from the area.
Khazem had retired from the Palestinian National Security Forces approximately nine years earlier. According to reports, his retirement was connected to disagreements with the Palestinian Authority and its officials.
Fathi Khazem became widely known following the death of his son, Raed Khazem, in April 2022. Raed carried out a shooting attack on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv in which three people were killed, and at least 16 were wounded. He was later killed by Israeli forces following a prolonged pursuit and clashes in Jenin. His body was also taken by Israeli forces.
In September 2022, Fathi Khazem’s second son, Abdul Rahman Khazem, was killed during an Israeli military operation in Jenin Camp. According to reports, Abdul Rahman had also been involved in assisting Raed in the Dizengoff attack.
Following Raed’s death, Israeli intelligence reportedly summoned Fathi Khazem for questioning. He reportedly refused to appear and demanded the return of his son’s body. He subsequently became a person sought by Israeli forces and remained subject to pursuit.
According to reports, Fathi Khazem also suffered a serious illness after his two sons were killed. Claims that Israeli forces had poisoned him were made by sources close to him but have not been independently verified.
The Palestinian Authority was also reported to have pressured him to abandon his association with armed resistance and surrender.
Fathi Khazem became a prominent public figure in Jenin because of his public support for Palestinian armed resistance. He was also the father of two children who were detained by Israel.
His son Humam was arrested in 2022. His daughter Shaima was arrested in 2021 after her home was raided. According to reports, Shaima completed memorizing the Quran while detained in Damon Prison.
