Operation Neptune Spear

On the night of May 1, 2011, three helicopters arrived over Bilal Town in Abbottabad during the U.S. operation targeting Osama bin Laden. U.S. Marines were deployed from one of the helicopters and entered Osama bin Laden’s compound. Guards inside the compound opened fire on the American commandos, resulting in an exchange of fire. During the fighting, the Osama Bin Laden security guards also shot down an American helicopter. Osama bin Laden’s guards and his son, Khalid bin Laden, were killed during the operation. American forces then moved to the upper floor of the compound in search of Osama bin Laden, who was staying there with members of his family. During the raid, one of Osama bin Laden’s wives was shot and wounded. She was not killed in the gunfire. There were also reports that one of Osama’s sons, Hamza bin Laden, managed to escape safely from the incident. Osama’s two wives, ten-year-old Safiya, and some other women were later arrested by the Pakistani military.
